THE ESSENTIAL INTERMEDIATE BULK CONTAINER (IBC)
With over two million in service around the world, for many chemical companies, intermediate bulk containers, or IBC’s, have become the essential link in their distribution chain. Originally developed as an alternative to drums, IBC’s have become one of the most cost effective packaging due to their reusability and long life. IBC’s are also one of the few methods available for the transportation of hazardous materials. In addition to transport applications, IBC’s are increasingly used for processing, such as mixing, and the storage of product.
There is almost no equal to metal IBC’s when it comes to versatility. Using IBC’s, it is not necessary to have a dedicated tank truck, or fleet of trucks, to transport product to the customer. Product can be shipped and managed to allow JIT deliveries, reducing inventories.
For product requiring agitation, American Machining can supply complete systems designed to replace the shipping cover, allowing in-place agitation directly at the point of use. Heating coils and insulating jackets are available to help maintain product temperature in transit, during unloading, or during use.
Unlike drums and plastic IBC’s, whose cost can exceed $0.10 per pound of product shipped, metal IBC’s are reusable and have been known to last up to twenty years, making the cost per pound less than $0.006 over their lifetime.
The costs of inventory and disposal for the customers are eliminated, and recycling makes metal IBC’s environment friendly. IBC’s also are space efficient when compared to drums, taking up 12-1/2% less space for the same amount of product.
Whether purchased or leased, it's clear that the role of the IBC is steadily increasing in the global marketplace. When you need to purchase, lease, repair, or clean an IBC, American Machining and Cygnet can supply just what you need. Call or EMAIL us to discuss your application today!

- SAFBUNG™ Part #110885 ....Developed and Patented in June 1995 -
Once you try a SAFBUNG™, You'll want to keep it for the lifetime of your tank-which you can actually do because it's durable enough to last that long. Unlike a convention bung, this one is made of slightly annealed, cast 316 stainless steel, making it harder and tougher that the throw-away bungs of the past. Moreover, the strategic use of machining and polishing only enhances the material's durability maintainability.
Another reason you'll never want to replace SAFBUNG™ is that it will become an integral part of your safety program. This engineered bung is both heavy and vented to prevent it from popping like a champagne cork, which could injure workers and damage property. Test prove that the patented vents begin relining any dangerous built-up pressure in the tank within a quarter turn.
- FUZ-VENT™ Part # 111726....Developed and Patented in March 1998 -
You can reuse AMI's patented FUZ-VENT™, until it blows. When the time comes to clean or fill a tank, simply unscrew the black HDPE, heat-activated fuse, wash it, and put it back in. The innovated fusible vent pays for itself after only a few turns of the tank's contents when it replaces the cheap crimped fuses that most users pry off and replace at each filling. And it is about a tenth the cost of the conventional reusable design of solder-filled stainless steel. FUZ-VENT™ , exceeds DOT/UN packaging specifications for the transportation of hazardous materials.
- POLY MIXING™
- AMI offers the most popular, heavy Duty Modular Poly Bin Mixing assembly in the market today. This unit utilizes 1/4" thick stainless steel framing, large adjustable clamps and AMI's dual bearing housing. The mixing blades are collapsible for insertion through the bung opening and then extend out as the drive unit starts. Standard AMI drive units are used. Some options include direct drive motors and dust covers.
